Prime number, quite a torture.

So what’s a prime number.

A positive integer that’s only divisible by 1 and itself.

That it is, the first thing i learnt in Secondary One. Later i realised they’re are good for tortures as well.

It would be quite a torture itself to ask someone to list the first 100 prime numbers in ascending series. Let’s try..

There is something that was created by George Woltmon, who made use of prime numbers to conduct the stress tests. This particular software “Prime95″ was written to test how well can your computer system work when it is put onto a 100% workload, to calculate as many prime numbers, bigger and bigger. Due to the fact that the bigger the number grows, it will be more difficult to determine if the particular number is a prime number.

On August 23rd, a UCLA computer in the GIMPS PrimeNet network discovered the 45th known Mersenne prime, 2^43,112,609-1, a mammoth 12,978,189 digit number! The prime number qualifies for the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s $100,000 award for discovery of the first 10 million digit prime number.

So, i tried this software on my new PC, just to test my maximum temperature my PC will hit when put all my 4 Cores at their maximum. Here are the results.

It reads a Maximum Temperature of 60degrees, from the idling temperature of 47degrees. Pretty decent work done by my 14cm CPU Fan and the other peripheral fans.

Anyway to sidetrack a little, i finally played the Red Alert 3 that i have gotten recently. The graphics is love.

First time i could proudly put the video settings of the game, details and resolution to “Ultra High” mode. Details such as water ripples, shadows and wind direction can be easily spotted and clearly seen running without hiccups.

The Hackintosh

For the past 2 to 3 months or so, I’ve been searching the web, the forums to get extra cheap deals to build my next PC. Not really a PC, but not really a Mac as well because it it doesnt have the brand of Apple. It’s a Hackintosh!

For those who aren’t so sure.. A Hackintosh is..

A computer built to run Apple Mac OS X is also known as a Hackintosh, which is a recycled term originally denoting the modified Lisa 2/10 running Mac System, or Macintosh.

Well, let’s not delve into the very technical parts of it. In layman terms, it’s having Apple Mac’s Operating System on a PC, which natively only can be used on Apple’s Computers.

“The internet is for porn”, other than porn as quoted by Monster Trekkie in AvenueQ, it’s a good place for good deals. Almost every part of the build was gotten off eBays and forums. It’s seriously a place for great deals.

The humble specs are as follows.. some of them are bought off the shelves though.

  • Gigabyte P35-DS3R Motherboard
  • Core 2 Quad Q9450 Processor
  • 4GB Kingston Ram
  • XFX XXX 8800GT 512MB GPU
  • PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500W PSU
  • SIlverstone Casing
  • LG 19″inch TV
  • Scythe Zipang PSU Cooler (a really BIG one)
  • Many other fans and coolers..

Thanks to Felix, with his help i managed to put all these parts together. Not a easy feat considering the constrain space in the Silverstone Casing and the amount of components we are trying to squeeze inside the unit.

After the hardware aspects, here comes the software part of the Hackintosh, equally challenging or more i should say.

After extensive reading on www.insanelymac.com i managed to acquire some basic knowledge on installing MAC on a PC using distro genius like kalyway and leo4all created, which makes installation so much simpler and direct. But it’s not as simple as installing other OS’s like XP or Ubuntu. The installation is more complex as the drivers are not so compatible and easily available.

After 3 days of installing and reinstalling, formatting and testing, 3 days of research and trying, I have successfully installed a OSx86 Leopard onto the PC which i have built. It is also dual boot with Windows XP SP3 so that i can play my games that require Windows platform. The sense of achievement is almost unbelievable.

Daily Dosage of 041207 | One leg kicking

It was almost the first time being alone for the whole event in the AV room. Normally, i would arrive only when the things are being setup properly, and all i have to do is to control them. But sad to say, i’m the only one covering the event today.

Well, in one way or another, it was a good learning point for me to not rely so much on others to do the setup, and really get down to earth and learn the operations of the startup of the system.

Luckily Boss was just a phone call away and there were some kind souls around for some assistance. Glad that the show when on well, though with a little glitches here and there.

Can’t really expect things to be that perfect with only 1 person in the room controlling EVERYTHING. From lightning to sound to slide shows, dvd players, cameras and mixer. So many knobs and buttons, how can i operate full swing with only 2 hands and 10 fingers. 

I ain’t a thousand hand buddha.

I’m still at the premature stage of playing with Photoshop, allow me to doodle some side works on my blog for experimental sake. I guess its more of such practices that can sharpen up my skills on this wonderful tool.

And thanks to Sayanee for imparting her skills on Photoshop to me, though i guess i won’t really make a good disciple. Hah!

I am glad that my leg is less sore now, able to walk faster now. Though the thought of climbing that flight of stairs, especially the downwards one still sends shivers to my thighs. Hopefully it will be better tomorrow, and that it will not restrict my movement and involvements in more upcoming gatherings and outings.

Yet another day of sheer enjoyment

Stepping foot onto Sentosa once again equates to more tanning. However, sad to say the intensity of the Sun isn’t that great today especially with the light showers in the afternoon, so we had only mild tan.

But according to TDW and LJH, such sun intensity is great for more solid tanning. Just like the slow cooker, it takes time to produce a good bowl of soup/dish. Too much fire will cause it to get burnt(human skin as well) easily. So believe it or not.. I’m a little more tan now than this morning.

This is the scene of Coasters during the high tide and heavy rain, when they tried to salvage the situation by retrieving their tanning beds and chairs back . Apparently, it wasn’t very successful due to the strong wind and rain.

Dinner was what we were waiting for, after starving the whole day and so much activity going on. Pariss International Seafood Buffet @ Marina square, with AMKSS Band Teachers, conductors.. and guest Kenneth’s girlfriend.

Seriously, i think the food’s pretty decent, not very extraordinary, but alright. Unlike BT and DW, i don’t really like mussels, so there isn’t much expensive food for me to spam. Unless you want to include fish, which i think was the main animal of the day and abalone.

And they actually took a whole bowl of that chocolate from the fountain to the table. Easier access to the chocolate, haha.

There was this waitress, quite unfriendly one. She came to our table and collected the used plates. Apparently she didn’t see that there was still fish on one of the plates, maybe the fish camouflaged itself too nicely with the colour of the plate.

I think we posses some kind of eye power, when she removed the plate from the table. All of us didn’t make a noise, instead we locked our eyes on the plate as she took it away from our table. Within seconds, the waitress placed the plate back on the table.

Great isn’t it?

It’s so another day of shiokness, but right now i’m feeling so darn shag. After few days of hectic schedules i’m more or less burnt out.

 More events lining up for me, got to rest more to survive the fun.

Busy

It seems that my life without studying is rather busy still.

My body seemed to be still under the fatigue of the studying of the alevels. i don’t really feel as energetic as before i don’t know why.

But anyway, i have been too tired to update the last few days, especially after the wedding dinners.

At least after 2 nights of wine and delicacy, i’m in a more refreshed state now.

It feels great to be back on the track, in the swimming pool and in the gym again. Now i can feel a little aches here and there which makes me feel great.

I think its more or less time to revert to my normal healthier lifestyles, exercise more and eating out less. Knowing that if i eat at home, the food would be like 937649 times healthier than outside stuffs. But sometimes its a little hard to keep the taste buds down yea also..

But looking at the dealings i have after 20th Nov, it seems that it is almost impossible to eat out less looking at the amount of dealings i have..

Haha, kind of scary isn’t it.

I’m kind of reaching full employment, i am on the PPC curve now.

I need to expand out my PPC curve, to memorize more things for Economics and Human Geography.

Some factors that can expand my PPC curve includes Supply Side Policies. Some of these policies can include..

  • More cash for newer toys like PSP, or set up a PSP fund for me.
  • Some nicer people in my life.. hmm heh..
  • MORE SLEEP
  • Get to use more of muscles than the brain..

I’m getting madder as the day passes, don’t be surprise that i visit Buangkok before 20 November.

All these mugging better be fruitful, if not its will be so sad.

Daily Dosage of 091107 | Running out of time

Mugging hasn’t been more tiring than this before. 

Its really a terror to study full swing for arts subjects. All one just have to do is to memorize and analyze, lacking the calculation and thinking part which is needed for science subjects which probably give more tinge of satisfaction when the correct answer is worked out.

I’m realizing, more of realized that i don’t actually have much time left .  Geography and Economics, its burning me out.

Somehow, i feel that at such critical period, the differential line that filters off the good students and the mediocre  is the mere word..

Concentration

Its quite hard i have to agree, but i just have to force it upon myself this word. There are thousand and one things in the world happening around us that can grab our attention away, and it is to our own determination whether we can shun them away or accept it in fate.

In order to maximize the efforts on learning, i can’t stress more on the importance of the above.

We have come this far, it is utterly stupid to get distracted by little things now that will affect the brightness of our future.

Hang on people, and myself, its going to be over soon before we know it.

Some sidetracks, i was kind of appalled at some of the things grownups do nowadays.

Daryl’s definition of grownups refers to someone that is older than him, cause he consider himself getting older everyday with books and memorizing work turning lots of his hair white.

I was at MacDonalds yesterday, and it was almost midnight timing that 3 aged 20 plus walked in with their laptops. They were carrying their laptop, and at that very instance my instinct tells me that they are University Students and are most probably doing their FYP or something like that.

They were actually tapping on the wireless@SG, playing maplestory!!!

Yes, its maplestory and i am not blind. The 2D online game that was designed for children, and its not them only, i’ve seen many people doing this same thing at public locations.

Well, i can’t say much, wireless@SG is a public good, and there is non-excludability in consumption, provided you have a notebook.

Look at the cute cartoons, imagine adults playing them. Some of my friends out there play that too, i don’t know why..

Daily Dosage of 061107 | Half way there

Today marks the end of my maths life. Its the end of A Levels Mathematics Paper, and the rest are mostly writing and memorising.

Say goodbye to my lovely Graphic Calculator, displace numerical values and symbols out of my mind for the moment. There’s a huge pile of notes beside my table top now, they consists of notes and works of the completed subjects and paper. Its growing, and i can’t help but feel happy about it.

I smell freedom, its near.

I have 6 days to prepare for the upcoming papers, the more challenging and tough ones. Economics and Geography Paper 2, considering that i haven’t touched them since aeons ago, kind of rusty already. I wished i had a delete button integrated in my brain, so that i can easily clear those stuffs i have memorized for Physical Geog, GP, Math, etc, and store in new stuffs. Sad to say i don’t have a lot of storage space allocated for studies, its kind of little i must confess, and i tend to remember things that is unnecessary. Absurd.

As said on my title, correction, its more than half way already. 6 out of 10 papers down, four more left, 14 days. Mug on!

Should i study in Starbucks, or library…? Hmm.. Choice, decision, sacrifices, delusions, fantasies.. REALITY!

Its the productiveness that counts though, without the extra perks while studying.. Haha, i don’t really get what i am saying here.

I guess its probably the end of O’levels exams already, DON’T GLOAT!, its not the end of your educational path, its just a transition point. Similar for A Level students though, but somehow i think NS is quite a good place for guys, to get away from studies for a while and grow some muscles, to be a man. Sad for the females, where they will once again embark on their arduous journey to study and mug, though its a whole new environment but somehow the life would be the same revolving around notes and more notes.

Seems like i’m starting to embrace NS with a smile. 1 month and 4 days to my enlistment, anyone want to send me off at Chua Choa Kang MRT? Sad to say i only have 2 invitations to the Police Academy and they are taken up by my family members. A send-off at CCK MRT would be good enough, take some photos with old friends before we meet again and till i have hair all over again.

Daily Dosage of 311007 | 21km is here.

Whoo.. Daryl is happy today.

I can’t believed that i managed to complete 21km in Bishan Park today. The timing was 2hrs 15mins. Fatigue starts to set in after the 17th KM, i felt like i was crawling my way through the last 4km.

It seems like all the sore, pain and fatigue disappear instantaneously when i reached the finishing point.

I managed to complete 6pull ups, even after the 21 km run. The feeling is just too great.

Some tips to consider to survive a long run (only if you consider 20km to be long enough for you)

  • Eat at least 5hours before the run

This is for your body to fully absorb what you have eaten to give you the energy to last. Also, one won’t be able to run well on a full and heavy stomache.

  • Eat Light

This is just my personal opinion, because i cannot stand the strong feeling of the food still lingering around my tastebuds. More fruits and vegetables would be adviceable because they are easier to digest. Meat might give you the protein, but you would have to consumer them earlier to make sure it no longer stays in your body.

  • Drink just enough water

Due to the fact that we perspire a lot and lose water during the run. It is inevitable that we replenish the water content in our body. But always make sure that we just take enough water to replenish those that were loss. Drinking too much will result in a heavy stomache and it might lead to stitch. Also, try to drink the water slowly instead of gulping it all down at once.

  • Consistency

Try to run on a consistent pace, never try to beat time as it will only result in more fatigue coming your way before reaching your destination. Just let your body be full control of the speed. When it’s tired, it will slowly down automatically, when its feeling good, the body would push you to pace up.

  • Determination

This is the last and one of the most important factor. Set your target, and run towards your target. If something crops up in the middle of the run, don’t push yourself. It will only lead to more injury making you less abled to run the next time round. If its only tiredness, then try to make yourself think, think of anything under the sun, then you probably forget about the sore and tiredness.

I’m double, triple checking my entry proof, confirming that there are no papers tomorrow. Yes, it reads Mathematics Paper 1 02/11/07, which is Friday. Great, i shall have one more day to sharpen my sword.

The Day Before Physics Paper.

Its really a different feeling altogether 2 years ago when i took O’Levels.

It too is a different feeling on the day i took my physics paper for midyears half a year ago.

Knowing that i am extremely weak in my sciences, (though i had no choice in this new JC Curriculum), i took up physics as a H1 subject with no other options left in me, when chemistry was totally out of the point.

For the past one year or so, i couldn’t be more than bothered about physics, its just a H1 subject that seems minor to me, or to my fellow classmates who took physics. Somehow as time draw nears towards A Levels, we realised that the H1 bears some kind of significance in the Entrance to University. I’m glad that there were enough time for all of us to catch up the 11 topics of physics in a mere 2-3 months.

Throughout this few months, i could proudly say that the subject i have worked really hard on was Physics. Yes, its just a H1 Paper, but one can never imagine how terrible my grades for physics were. The effort that has to be put into place to improve it had to be much much greater than the other subjects. It was almost like learning from scratch, because of the inattentiveness during lectures and the laziness during tutorials.

I guess its stress and tension that makes people work and want to work.

With physics paper tomorrow, the fear for it is finally subdued by the preparation and  hard work put into it. We have put in the effort, and we MUST do well. ( I hope Mr Sim is looking at this)

Right here, i want to thank my tuition teacher for putting in the effort to teach me, a know-it-none kid about physics. I know its hard, considering my exceptionally poor foundations for it, and that its less than 8 sessions of tuition. I’ve learnt much from you, not only physics but also other stuffs that we share. Thank You ( I know you are reading this =] )

 Some advices before the physics paper

  • Remember your entry  proof (applies to all papers)
  • Sleep early (even if its afternoon paper; applies to all papers)
  • All other necessities that are required for the exams, pen, pencil calculator…(applies to all papers)
  • DO ONLY 2 QNS FOR SECTION B (we have been practising the whole paper forgetting about the instructions that we only need to complete 2 out of 3)
  • Look into the mirror and give yourself a thumbs up with your right hand (The Right Hand Grip Rule)
  • Massage your thumb, index finger and middle finger on your left hand ( Fleming’s Left Hand rule)
  • Use the Buddha Palm, only if you know (Mr Guang’s Rule)

Yes, we are on our way to defeat the paper and defeat ourselves.

For our parents, teachers, people around us and most importantly OURSELVES!

Efficiency getting in the way.

Is Singapore way of efficiency getting into our way of life. I certainly think so.

Right now, I’m still feeling sore about the incident that happened this morning, where the issue of efficiency comes into the picture.

I was at the coffee shop savoring my bowl of fishball noodles, when nature called on me. Due to the fact that i was alone, i placed the chopsticks and spoon in a neat way on the bowl, indicating that i’m not done with it, as there’s still like 1/3 of it left in the bowl.

BUT.. When i came back, my bowl of noodles was gone.. Yes, GONE! I’m sure i took less than 2 minutes, its was definitely done in a jiffy. But its gone. At the very instant, i was feeling so @#$%^&*( about it. I had to spend another 80cents on a piece of pancake of fill my full.

Is it really that big a necessary to clear the plates and dishes the moment i leave my seat, or is it that there is also some kind of competitiveness in clearing plates in the coffee shop, where each one of them have a certain quota to meet at the end of the day, like 100 plates, in order to maintain their rice bowl.

There’s competition almost everywhere and at any instances on this small island call Singapore. Where here i am, competing with 10 over thousands of Junior College Students for the entrant to a University, probably the guy that’s beside me now is competing with another 62billion people out there for a job.

The way our society has brought us up to till today has made is such that competitiveness is inevitable and it has been integrated in our daily life. Just take the library for example. All libraries in Singapore opens at 10am. I decided to try my luck for a nice studying place there, and knowing the exam period, there’s bound to be a high influx of muggers making their way there right before the opening hour to secure a place there.

But, to my dismay there was a whole lot of people when i arrived there. Its really illustrates the rat race in the society really well. The moment the doors opened, it seemed like it was the treasure cave in the Ali BaBa story, everyone stormed in grabbing any (treasure), in this case, seats, that they are able to get hold of.

Any step slower than the rest and there goes your chance of studying in the library. Fortunately, i managed to get a seat, by being a typical Singaporean, dashing up the stairs when the door opened.

Thats the reason why I’m here at Starbucks coffee, my favorite hunt once again. I don’t even have to make my orders, the coffee maker just smiles at me and asked me if it was the usual, and headed on with the coffee in my tumbler.

Great ain’t it?

I WANT TO COMPLAIN!!!

I want to complain that the tv on tv-mobile is irritating. Especially when the reception is utterly bad.

I want to complain that the aircon in Starbucks is super cold.

I want to complain that the bus 166 always arrives so slowly.

I want to complain that she’s attatched.

I want to complain that there’s an grumpy old lady sitting beside me on the bus.

I want to complain that i can’t run more that 6km today.

I want to complain that i still can only do 4 pull ups.

I want to complain that alevels is draining my life and my energy away.

I want to complain that all these complains will not go away if i just continue complaining.

I want to complain that I’m tired, and thats the thing that i will do to stop complaining about it.

Daily Dosage of 231007 | Studying @ Starbucks; daddy’s BACK.

I’m currently at MacDonalds, tapping on their facilities to do some blogging. It’s rather cool that the whole Singapore is getting wired up, it makes things so convenient anywhere, everywhere.

Taking a break from the long haul of physics revision, allow me to once again bore you with my daily updates.

How interesting could a day begin and end during the exam period. Time spent could be nothing more than studying and more studying.

Starbucks@Novena proved to be quite a good place for mug hards, with the rather quiet atmosphere, and the aroma of the coffee, giving some perks to the monotonous studying.

They had decent tables and chairs, with power plug for my notebook. Couldn’t ask for anything more than that.

I was bored after awhile. Spot the difference

Yes, my drink from a piping hot one turned icy cold at the end. This shows that I’ve been sipping real slow, because that’s my passport for the day.

The coffee had managed to keep me awake, till now.

On another note, i realised that these burn outs are making me unhealthy. My body symptoms shows it all. My sensitive scalp has started to peel once again, this only happens when i lead some irregular lifestyles. Like staying up late, and inconsistent food intake.

This studying period has decreased my workout time greatly. Its been a long time since i put on my running shoes. For that, it will take some time before i hit back my prime again after A’s.

After A’s, after A’s.. My mind’s all revolving around the events that’s going to happen after it. Though i know it’s not the best time to think about it now. Sometimes, its good to let the mind run wild before capturing it back to concentration, unless you want to see a psychotic Daryl being drowned in notes and more notes.

Studying can really make someone grow fat. Its just eating and sitting and eating and sitt… Those brain and arm movements aren’t going to burn that much of calories from your body. One way i’ve tried was to eat little but take small bites, SMALL bites in between break time. Eating too full will result one to become more lethargic, having no mood to continue studying and meet the zee monster. Coffee is too a good companion, especially if you are caffeine addictive.

My dad’s like finally back from India once again. 3 months flown by just in a tick. Well, i can’t be sure if his presence will add to more pressure to me, having to do well for A’s, but one thing for sure would be that the house would be more lively with one more person. Got to treasure the time left with the family before entering NS, though i know it’s pathetically little. With me always out, my sister having her O Levels now and my brother and mum busy with their own stuffs, its quite difficult to get everyone together.

The atmosphere of a whole family gathering together is something that is not attainable with other group of people, no matter how close you are with them. That’s the power of kinship, the blood and bonds that run in us.

On a happier note, my dad brought back more merchandise from Adidas, Nike..

I guess that’s about all for today, back to more burnouts with the books and notes.
