System Down!!

July 06, 2007 By: darylim Category: just passing-by No Comments →

I’m currently at my school’s lab. My home’s system is down in my attempt to upgrade it.

Will be up and running ASAP.

By the way, there’s something i shan’t forget.

There is this Live Earth 24-hours broadcasted concert from July 7 (Sat) 7pm – July 8 (Sun) 7pm. Its on channel 5.

What is Live Earth?

A monumental music event that aims to bring together more than 2 billion people on 7/7/07 to raise awareness about global warming. With 24 hours of music across 7 continents and performances by more than 150 of the world’s top musicians, Live Earth will engage, connect, and inspire individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve the climate crisis.

-

There will probably your favourite artises performing at the concert. In the meantime, do not forget the environmental awareness messages that the media is trying to convey.

Also, don’t forget to wear green on the 7th and 8th of July to show your support for the green environment.

Lastly, action speaks louder than words. DO it, not just say it. Saying alone will bring you no where in conserving the environment.

Childhood

July 04, 2007 By: darylim Category: thoughts, writings No Comments →

The moment here marks the end of one torture and soon the start of the other.
Alright, its the end of my papers for Midyears, i have full four days to take a breather before the next journey starts for me to the reaching milestone.

Today, I shall blog about the controversy of childhood.

As parents, it is all their wish and dream for their child to grow up to become good and useful people in the society.

But are these happening at the expense of the childhood memories of the kid?

In order for a child to be able to do well in life, parents tend to send their child to many different crash courses to help nurture their talent from within. Where such courses will vary from, piano lessons, ballet lessons, language lessons etc. The list just continues. There are just so many things that a parent would want their child to excel in.

Parents would also love to send their child for endless tuitions so that they will be able to have good grades in school.

However, as a child. Young and innocent he is, how would he be able to apprehend and understand the fact that these are beneficial for him. We’ve got to look things at the child’s perspective. To him, these amount of work are just like barbed wires that strips and puts a boundary to his freedom.

As children, what they would perceive fun as, would be to play and not have any worries for studies and work. Hence, they would only understand the whole situation when they grow and mature. But the bad memories of childhood will be embedded in their minds forever.

On another stand, if the parent chose to give way and let their child play through his young days. The child will have a wonderful childhood, but might not be able to excel well in life.

Hence the controversy of should, or should not parents tax their child with heavy workload and stress in their childhood years. Think about it yourself.

Here i present you one of the fabulous works by Michael Jackson, Childhood. The lyrics are a meaningful bunch. Enjoy!

Have you seen my Childhood?
I’m searching for the world that I come from
‘Cause I’ve been looking around
In the lost and found of my heart…
No one understands me
They view it as such strange eccentricities…
‘Cause I keep kidding around
Like a child, but pardon me…

People say I’m not okay
‘Cause I love such elementary things…
It’s been my fate to compensate,
for the Childhood
I’ve never known…

Have you seen my Childhood?
I’m searching for that wonder in my youth
Like pirates in adventurous dreams,
Of conquest and kings on the throne…

Before you judge me, try hard to love me,
Look within your heart then ask,
Have you seen my Childhood?

People say I’m strange that way
‘Cause I love such elementary things,
It’s been my fate to compensate,
for the Childhood I’ve never known…

Have you seen my Childhood?
I’m searching for that wonder in my youth
Like fantastical stories to share
The dreams I would dare, watch me fly…

Before you judge me, try hard to love me.
The painful youth I’ve had

Have you seen my Childhood….

thee can understand how i’m feeling now?

results ‘re bad to the pitts, ‘ve never expected that,

thou so down, deep deep down. Who Knows?

time’s racing off, not so in abundance anymore,

i’ve woken up, haven’t you?

i’ll definitely make you pay for these, be it five, ten of fifty years. You just wait!

Oligopolistic Competition

July 02, 2007 By: darylim Category: daily dosage No Comments →

I was at the movies AGAIN today. Thats the third one in 4 days time, where these include Transformer, Die Hard 4.0 and Surfs Up. I watched the last one with my family, as Ive watched the other few, they had not much choice left but to watch the childish Surfs Up. I shall not elaborate further about the movie; however, I shall blog about another concept of Econs I experienced today.

I was at the Eng Wah Cinemas in Jubilee Entertainment Centre, the movies there are dirt cheap. They are going at 5 bucks on Mondays Wednesdays. The reason behind this is, Price Competition.

As you all know, ever since the opening of the Cathay Cinema in AMK Hub, Eng Wah would have well anticipated that the former would draw away the movie crowd from them. Hence, Eng Wah has chosen to undergo price cutting for competition, as there arent much product differentiation that can take place in the movie industry.

Well, I suppose the response has been rather well I guess, though I cant be sure if they are making any losses or losing in revenue in the long-run. But, all that i know that it is beneficial to the consumer as these firms engage themselves in Price competition, as we get to enjoy movies at a much lower rate!

I was there at around 2pm, however tickets for shows that are only screened at 6pm are all sold out. Crazy like hotcakes ain’t it?

Well, you will never see scenes like these before Eng Wah altered their prices.

Just look at the crowd and queue for the movie tickets.
The queue’s all the way to wondermaid’s territory

So guys, if you are heading for movies in Ang Mo Kio area, get to Jubilee. It might save you a couple of bucks for some snacks or such.My school’s back again tomorrow. Till then, mug hard! Haha.

Allocative Efficiency

July 01, 2007 By: darylim Category: Others No Comments →

Probably, for Econs one of the most basic term that most students will know is allocative efficiency.

Allocative efficiency is only achieved when resources are allocated to different uses in such a way that it is not possible to make anyone better off without making somebody worse off. It is possible for a firm to be producing its output very efficiently and yet be producing the wrong goods. Therefore it is important to produce the output that is most preferred by consumers.

I was on the bus yesterday whereby i thought of a rather weird scenario which illustrates this concept.

Lets say u are on a not very crowded bus. You decided not to take a seat and stand at the bus aisle. By doing so, you are not promoting allocative efficiency and putting a strain on the society hence adding on costs to the society. Don’t understand? Let me elaborate further.

If everyones acts the same and not sit, then it will reduce the optimal carrying capacity of the bus. With the same amount of fuel, the same amount of labour to operate the bus. Therefore much resources will be not optimized.

Think about the further things that might happen. People might be in the need to rush for jobs, or flights. Or even for some investments. Which will lead to more impacts, regardless socially and economically.

Haha. The above is just my 20cents point of view, please take it lightly.

Oldies Appreciation

July 01, 2007 By: darylim Category: just passing-by No Comments →

This is one of my favourite country song. The lyrics make people really want to leave this highly urbanised city to that into a pretty suburban area. Where sky scrapers and technology are not at abundance, but rather nature scene like lakes and mountains.

I remembered singing this song i think in Primary 1 or 2 for music lessons. This song’s just great.

Enjoy!
